We recently spent a mid-summer early evening at the Portola Vineyards Winery summer concert series, featuring the jazz musicians, Paul McCandless and the Charged Particles. All jokes aside about whether all the band members were physicists or chemists (given the proximity of the winery to Stanford AND its placement in the heart of Silicon Valley), the music was a lovely, calming way to spend an evening sitting on a blanket, enjoying a picnic, and sipping chilled wine. It was an intimate atmosphere, with only about 40 guests, but the attendees spanned the range from children running and playing in the fields through experienced summer concert series go-ers, who set up with fancy cheese and tables. All in all, an extremely pleasant way to spend an evening with the one you love.
