Fourth of July Weekend

A three-day weekend. Multiple cookouts. Fireworks. Friends. Added together, that makes for a spectacular Fourth of July weekend.

On the actual holiday, we had friends over to grill out after discovering that, by luck, no one had booked the shared grill at our residence hall for the evening of July 4th.

Before we knew it, the sky was getting dark and we rushed off to try to catch the fireworks at Skyline Amphitheater in Mountain View. For the holiday, the San Francisco Orchestra plays a pops concert in the amphitheater, complete with a concluding fireworks display. We didn’t have tickets to the event, but did have insider information that if we got close, we’d still get a good show. With excellent luck, two of our friends live just over a mile from the amphitheater. After hustling to their apartment, we walked/ran to the highway overpass to watch the fireworks, darting across the four highway lanes and bringing back flashbacks of stupid things I’ve done in high school, arriving just as the show started.

We followed up the July 4th Grill-out with a July 5th Cook-out, hosted by two of our favorites, Nick and Laura at Oakland’s Dimond Park. You can always count on delicious food when those two are involved, and from the homemade sausage buns, to the grilled haloumi (one of my favorite cheeses), to the delicious variety of galettes (yes, there were two and yes, I tried them both) and the browned butter, brown sugar chocolate chip cookies, we had very happy tummies.

After filling our stomachs a bit past what was comfortably full, we headed out to hike and explore Dimond Park. We punctuated a beautiful afternoon with swings, slides, tumbling (one of our group members was a former traveling acrobat, how cool is that?!), and cartwheels by all in one of the park’s open fields. This is totally my type of fun!
